Athens Restaurants & Cafés

Of all of the things to do in Athens, dining is central to the Greek day and the Greek culture. Benefiting from fresh and fragrant products, Greek cuisine offers a tempting array of traditional fare served with enthusiasm and vitality. Influenced by its history, Greece has enjoyed a reciprocal culinary exchange with its neighbors in Turkey, the Middle East and the Balkans. Greece's proximity to the sea makes fresh fish a specialty and that is no different at the Coral Hotel, our splendid yet quaint seaside Athens hotel. Fish restaurants and tavernas serve it grilled or fried, often whole.

From May through October, dining can be enjoyed in open air surroundings.

International cuisine influences of late have resulted in more creative and upscale dining choices, as well. Over the past five years, the Greek restaurant scene has been radically transformed.

The hotel will gladly recommend a restaurant and make reservations on your behalf. Or you are welcome to enjoy dinner with the Coral Hotel in our fine dining restaurant. And a word of advice: "go where the locals go."

Coffee is an integral part of life in Greece. One can spend leisure time in any of the numerous Cafes or "Kafeneio" which are found on practically every corner of the city. A traditional Kafeneio (greek for Coffee house) reveals a look into the past, offering syrupy and rich baklava, spoon desserts, rice pudding, cheese and spinach pies, ouzo with meze and Greek coffee. Kafeneio is challenged by the more modern "Zaharoplasteio" (pastry shop) or Cafe, either quaint and private or considerably large and lively, serving a selection of coffees, fresh fruit juices, pastries, ice creams and assorted confections. Most pastry shops will sell pastries to go, wrapped in gift boxes, ribbons and all. Almost every square meter of the city has two or more pastry shops. Well known for its sidewalk Cafes, Kolonaki Square (little column) is a chic residential neighborhood of Athens just below Lycabettus Hill.

In very close proximity to the Coral a true taste of coffee shops and people watching can be enjoyed in the Flisvos Marina area. Click for more information.
